Nursery Wallpaper – a guide to finding and buying it on line in the UK

Trouble Finding Nursery Wallpaper?

Are you looking for nursery wallpaper to buy on line from UK web sites? It’s not easy, is it? When I checked around I found:

  • Most sites listed by the major search engines are really only selling borders or stick on decals.
  • Many of the sites are selling to the US market and don’t ship even if you were prepared to pay.
  • There are sites promoting designer nursery wallpapers but many of those do not actually sell on line and are only available to buy through interior designers.

Nursery Wallpaper – where to look

I found the following sites do sell a range of nursery wallpapers on line to the UK. Their prices range from very reasonable to quite expensive and their delivery times are pretty good.

B & Q nursery wallpaper- mostly cartoon based nursery wallpapers and borders. Still don’t overlook the possibility of combining a busy cartoon design with something from their bedroom wallpapers to produce a gentler effect.

Mothercare – seems obvious doesn’t it? But not unless you dig quite deep! They do have a range of nursery wallpapers with quite a wide choice of designs well hidden within their site.

Laura Ashley – nothing in stock and only a choice of pink or blue with tiny stars when it is in stock.

Amazon – look to be the best bet at the moment with lots of cheerful, character-based designs.

Vintage Nursery Wallpaper exhibition

nursery wallpaper-vintageThis lovely nursery wallpaper design features in an exhibition tracing the links between children’s wall paper and literature at the Design Museum in New York. It seems that ever since the introduction of modern printing techniques parents have drawn inspiration for decorating the nursery from images in their favourite children’s books.

The exhibition web site says:

What do Cinderella, Peter Rabbit, Popeye, Mickey Mouse and Goofy, Winnie-the-Pooh, Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, and Pinocchio have in common? They are among the dozens of beloved children’s story characters that can be found in Wall Stories: Children’s Wallpaper and Books, an exhibition which plumbs the holdings of Cooper-Hewitt’s Wallcoverings department—the largest such collection in the United States, with more than ten thousand objects dating from the seventeenth through the twenty-first centuries—and the Museum’s 70,000-volume National Design Library.

They then go on to explain:

In the nineteenth century, profound social and economic changes led to the increased popularity of books and wallpaper produced specifically for children. Increased literacy; the establishment of public schools, child-welfare agencies, and child-labor laws; the practice of pediatrics as a medical specialty; and the growth of literature targeted specifically for children helped create an unprecedented awareness in society of the value of childhood. As the Industrial Revolution helped create a wealthy middle class, families lived in larger homes and, consequently, gave children their own rooms.

And so began our obsession with creating the perfect nursery to nurture our children in and to give them their own space within our homes.

Vintage Nursery Wallpaper – still available.

Of course you could go the ‘e-bay’ route and try to buy actual vintage nursery wallpaper but it can be very hard to deal with. Over time the paper becomes brittle and rolls can be badly marked, faded or discoloured. If you are going for a nostalgic, shabby chic look this won’t matter and you might even welcome it. However many people want the nostalgic effect without the hassle.

Luckily manufacturers are aware of this and nursery wallpaper based on many classic children’s book illustrations are still available today. These range from Peter Rabbit to modern classics like the Mr Men and Paddington Bear.

What children’s book would you like to see turned into nursery wallpaper?

Nursery Fabric Nostalgia – a child’s island of delights

nursery wallpaper and matching fabricThis delightfully nostalgic range of nursery fabric and matching wallpaper comes from Jill Northam, London.
The fabric is in muted shades of stone and is very reminiscent of vintage “Swallows and Amazons” book illustrations.
The mood is one of nostalgia for happy summer days filled with adventures and the kind of childhood we all wish we’d had. You just know these scamps went home to massive nursery teas and lashings of ginger beer!
It is the perfect choice of fabric for nursery curtains and perhaps a feature wall. It would work very well with creams, subtle sage greens or even a little earthy red to warm it up.

Nursery Fabric can be subtle

This design really will grow with your child and provide interesting talking points as the child becomes more verbal. There’s no law that says a nursery has to be full of bright colours and if you are trying to create a restful haven this nursery fabric and wallpapercould be an interesting starting point.

You can see in the close up of the Children’s Island fabric how charming the illustrations really are. A whole story could be woven around them by an enterprising parent.

As the web site says:

Child Island

Promising dreamy nights filled with adventure, choose whimsical styling for the nursery with the gentle candy colours and sketched scenes of Child Island :

a nostalgic story capturing the innocence of childhood.

Use all over or simply on an accent wall and team with matching fabric in 100% cotton and linen (Jill Northam, London)

Other Vintage Style Nursery Fabric Items

This sort of look would work really well teamed with other vintage styled nursery fabrics, particularly for the cot, perhaps something in a subtle candy stripe or even better a classic gingham in muted tones. You could also display vintage nursery objects or tin toys as ornaments, on a suitably high shelf.

A nursery fabric with a pattern that will last beyond those first few months

Avoid expensive mistakes. It can be hard to think through exactly the kind of design you want and how long you expect it to last. There are many books on Nursery designs you could consult.

Of course one of the best approaches, if you can afford it, is to use an interior design service to help you choose the overall effect you create with your nursery fabric and wallpaper.

See the latest nursery wallpaper from top UK designers

nursery wallpaper from mooThis subtle take on nursery wallpaper comes from the young British design team at Absolute Zero.

Their friends were so bored with the usual run of the mill designs and colour ranges aimed at new parents they managed to persuade the team to come up with something a bit more original. They’ve launched their own mini site Minimoderns with some super cool design ideas.

Moo nursery wallpaper is one of the results. Ideal as a nursery wallpaper the range also includes fabric and cushions.

There are also other designs which would be suitable for an older child including some really fun ones that are designed to be coloured in by the child on the wall! What a wonderful idea! I coloured my walpaper in when I was little but I don’t remember my Mum being very happy about it :-)

The Moo range of nursery wallpaper costs £38 a roll and will soon be available to order from Heals.

While you wait why not have a look at some unique schemes using nursery wallpaper ?
