Nursery Wallpaper – vintage boudoir Parisian girlie chic?

Nursery Wallpaper for the Stars

According to Life and Style Weekly Tori Spelling has chosen a bright pink theme for 2-month-old baby girl, Stella Doreen McDermott’s room.

She loves the bright pink in her room (it’s) vintage boudoir Parisian girlie chic.

Tori then adds:

They say bright colors calm babies. (source)

Now I can’t help wondering a couple of things. First off how can you tell a two month old baby “loves” a room? Secondly who is it who says ‘bright colours calm babies”?

I shouldn’t be too mean about this Hollywood Mum’s choices though. She has grasped one important aspect of decorating a nursery. The person you have to please is not the teeny scrap with the huge lungs. It is the person who will spend the most time awake in that room. You! So if Tori loves her vintage, pink, Parisian boudoir then all’s well in the world. I’m doing my best to push away the thought that in this case it will be Nanny who spends most time in the room. I am, but it’s not working!

Nursery Wallpaper – Shabby chic

Now I’m a bit of a fan of just the style Tori is describing. I’d tend to go for a more muted palate as you want the baby to sleep in occasionally! Shabby Chic is a gorgeous style for a nursery. The Parisian look involves lots of white paint, a feature rosebud or candy stripe pink wallpaper and maybe a chandelier.

You can mix a nursery wallpaper like this one with a subtle candy stripe for a slightly less flowery look. I think these flowers might be slightly overwhelming in a smaller room unless they were confined to a feature wall.

I suspect this room is more restrained than the one young Stella sleeps in but it retains that slightly vintage French feel without being overwhelming.

You can create exactly the mood you are looking for by careful choice of your nursery wallpaper.

Nursery Wallpaper Hides a Nightmare

The nursery wallpaper in this story in the Sunderland Echo had an ugly secret. A young couple were happily preparing the nursery in their new home for their baby, Toby. Everything was fine until they started to strip off the nursery wallpaper.

As they started to strip the nursery wallpaper a large section of plaster fell off the wall:

Craig said: “We were about to move Toby into the third bedroom, but thank God we didn’t because a huge piece came off and landed right where his cot would have been.

It seems likely that the plaster in the room was in a very bad state and it was only the nursery wallpaper that was holding it up!

This can be a huge problem in older houses. Plaster can get crumbly and become unsafe over time. The nursery is often placed in the smallest bedroom and in older properties that tends to have two outside walls. This means the room can be colder and more prone to damp. People used to be quite happy to add layer upon layer of wallpaper to their walls. I’ve stripped rooms with as many as 15 layers of wallpaper dating back to the 1960s or even earlier! The worst thing is when paint has been added on top of many layers of paper. In that case the sheer weight of papers and paint can be enough to loosen the plaster. There’s no sure way of telling the state of the plaster underneath all that paper. You have to be prepared that it will all have to come off.

If you are decorating your nursery take extra special care and check the state of the plaster. This is one of the reasons that it’s important to strip off all the old nursery wallpaper before you start.
