Eurostar Breaks And The Paris Trocadero

The Trocadero in Paris is sadly best known as the nearest metro station to the Eiffel Tower, as people on Eurostar breaks hurry to conquor the iconic landmark. I say sadly, only because there is so much more to the Trocadero area than that, and besides it’s actually nearer to get there via Metro Bir-Hakeim.

Trocadero is in the 16th arrondissement of Paris, which is an upmarket area with some very prestigious properties and lots of expensive hotels, which is great for Paris breaks where money is no object. The cafes and restaurants in the area tend to be a tad more expensive than other districts of Pars too, but don’t let that put you off – it’s always going to be possible to find an affordable side street establishment if you’re on a more modest budget .

Paris Trocadero History

The Trocadero lies across the Seine from the Eiffel Tower. It’s another area of Paris named after a famous French war victory. The French won the Battle of Trocadero in 1823 protecting the autocratic Spanish King Ferdinand VII. Some forty years later they honored this victory by renaming the square called Place du Roi de Rome (King of Rome Square). Next year, the Palais de Trocadero (Trocadero Palace) was built on the site as the centerpiece of a world fair celebrating France’s recovery from its defeat in the Franco-Prussian war. The Palace was built like a concert hall in mixed Moorish and Byzantine style with a large aquarium occupying the lower level. For the Exposition Internationale World Fair of 1937 the old Palais du Trocadero was demolished and replaced by the modernist Palais de Chaillot.

The complex now includes several museums.

  • The Musee national de la Marine (Naval Museum)
  • The ethnological Musee de l’Homme (Museum of Man)
  • The Musee national des Monuments francais (National Museum of French Monuments)
  • Theatre National de Chaillot (Chaillot National Theater).

At the Palais de Chaillot the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948. The esplanade was renamed the esplanade des droits de l’homme (esplanade of human rights).

So there are plenty of cultural and educational destinations in this arrondissment to greatly enrich any length Eurostar Breaks to Paris  -  after you’ve been up the Eiffel tower of course !

Eurostar now even greener than flying

May 30th, 2009 · 2 Comments · eurostar

It seems obvious that rail travel must be more efficient than air travel right? So why are some airlines able to offer ridiculously cheap headline prices for international travel? Well there are two reasons. One way they fund the flights is by getting obscure airports toe PAY them to deliver visitors, and the other is a loophole in the fuel taxes which allow aviation fuel to go untaxed due to the lack of an international agreement between governments. If you don’t think this is right, then you might like consider  further ecological arguments for taking the  eurostar train instead of the plane.

Eurostar’s 186 mph high-speed train service has become the number one choice for travellers between London, Ebbsfleet, Ashford, Paris, Brussels, Lille, Calais, Disneyland Resort Paris, Avignon and the French Alps. But that’s not all – don’t forget that Eurostar is also a more environmentally friendly option. Flying between London, Paris and Brussels generates ten times more emissions of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide (CO2) per traveller than going by Eurostar.

Ten times as much CO2!

Eurostar is also committed to generating even less carbon dioxide emissions per traveller in future years and has pledged to achieve a reduction of 25% per traveller journey by 2012 (compared to 2006).

Taking the train is now the only socially responsible green way to travel where its an alternative to flying.

Mayor of Paris supports Ken Livingstone

April 29th, 2008 · No Comments · french in London

Passengers on the Eurostar to Paris these days are just as likely to be Parisians going home for a break as visiting Londoners. The number of French people living and working in London has exploded in recent years, fueled by demand for their skills in the finance sector, and a preference for setting up business in a less regulated environment. An estimate came up in a report about the two Mayors of the twin capitals, with London elections on Thursday May 1st and a visit from Ken Livingstone’s Parisian counterpart:

Mayor of Paris comes out to support Ken – from Pink News

It is estimated that over 300,000 French people live in London, all of whom are eligible to vote in the election on May 1st.
